💡 The Core Formula — Glass Weight from First Principles
Every glass weight calculation on this site — from the single-panel converter above to the main calculator on the home page — traces back to one physical fact: glass is silica-based with a density of approximately 2.5 g/cm³ (2500 kg/m³). This number means that every cubic meter of standard float glass weighs 2500 kg, and every square meter of glass at 1 millimeter thick weighs exactly 2.5 kg. The formula is:
The density coefficient is the single most important variable in the formula. Most architectural glasses (float, tempered, laminated) sit very close to 2.5, so they all return nearly identical weights. Specialty glasses shift this number: borosilicate is 2.23 (11% lighter), lead crystal is 3.1 (24% heavier), and flint glass is 3.7 (48% heavier). The calculator above lets you pick the glass type so the density coefficient is applied automatically.
Glass Type Density Matrix
| Glass Type | Density (g/cm³) | Surface Weight 10mm (kg/m²) | vs Float |
|---|---|---|---|
| Float (Annealed) | 2.50 | 25.0 kg/m² | 0% |
| Tempered (Toughened) | 2.52 | 25.2 kg/m² | +1% |
| Borosilicate | 2.23 | 22.3 kg/m² | -11% |
| Lead Crystal | 3.10 | 31.0 kg/m² | +24% |
| Flint Glass | 3.70 | 37.0 kg/m² | +48% |
⚠️ Density Error — The #1 Weight Mistake
If you use the wrong density, your entire weight estimate is off. A flint glass (3.7) project entered as float (2.5) will give you a weight that is 33% too low. For architectural work this almost never matters — float and tempered are within 1% of each other — but for optical, lab, or decorative glass, always confirm the density from the supplier datasheet. The calculator above supports all common density presets and allows custom entry.

How Real Jobs Work — Four Worked Examples
Frameless Shower Panel
36 × 72 in (915 × 1830 mm) frameless, 10 mm tempered
Area = 0.915 × 1.830 = 1.67 m² | 1.67 × 10 × 2.5 = 41.75 kg ≈ 92 lbsTwo-person lift with suction cups. Hardware should handle 25 kg/m² surface load.
Round Glass Table Top
48 in (1220 mm) diameter round, 1/2 in (12 mm) tempered
Area = π × 0.61² = 1.17 m² | 1.17 × 12 × 2.5 = 35.1 kg ≈ 77 lbsTwo-person install. The base must support the full 77 lbs plus any items on top.
Aquarium Side Panel
36 × 48 in (915 × 1220 mm), 12 mm tempered
Area = 0.915 × 1.22 = 1.12 m² | 1.12 × 12 × 2.5 = 33.6 kg ≈ 74 lbsFull aquarium glass kit (5 panels) totals ~72 kg. Floor load check required.
Double Glazed Window IGU
1800 × 1200 mm window, 4/16/4 clear/air/clear
Two panes: 2 × (1.8 × 1.2 × 4 × 2.5) = 2 × 21.6 = 43.2 kg | Plus spacer ~0.5 kg = 43.7 kg ≈ 96 lbsWindow installer should stage the IGU — it is a two-person lift.
❌ Common Weight Calculation Myths
Myth 1: Tempered glass is heavier
Tempering is heat treatment, not material replacement. The density shift from 2.50 to 2.52 is under 1%. For almost all real jobs, use 2.5 for both and be within supplier tolerance.
Myth 2: Gas fill makes IGU units heavier
Air, argon and krypton gaps contribute essentially zero weight — about 0.01% of the total unit mass. The IGU's weight is simply two (or three) panes added together, plus the aluminum spacer bar.
Myth 3: Laminated is much heavier than monolithic
The PVB interlayer adds about 0.1 kg/m² — negligible. The real weight difference is that laminated uses two glass panes. A 6+0.38+6 laminated has twice the glass mass of a single 6 mm pane, weighing ~15.1 kg/m² vs 15 kg/m².
Myth 4: Glass thickness greatly affects density
Glass density is a material property, not a thickness property. 3 mm float and 19 mm float both have density 2.50 g/cm³. The thicker pane simply has more volume, so it weighs more per square meter — which is exactly what the core formula captures.
How to Manually Calculate Glass Weight — Step by Step
Measure the panel dimensions in millimeters
Use a tape measure or calipers. Measure the actual glass, not the opening. Record width and height.
Record the thickness in millimeters
Most architectural glass is 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 mm. If you have fractional inches, convert: 1/4" = 6 mm, 3/8" = 10 mm, 1/2" = 12 mm.
Calculate the area in square meters
Multiply width × height, then divide by 1,000,000 (or 1000²). Example: 1200 × 900 mm = 1,080,000 mm² = 1.08 m².
Apply the core formula
Weight (kg) = Area (m²) × Thickness (mm) × 2.5. Example: 1.08 × 10 × 2.5 = 27 kg for a 1200×900×10mm panel.
Multiply by glazing layers and quantity
Double glazed = ×2, triple = ×3. For a batch of identical panels, multiply by the count.
Convert to pounds if needed
Multiply kg by 2.20462. Example: 27 kg × 2.20462 = 59.5 lbs.
Frequently Asked Questions About Glass Weight
How do I calculate the weight of glass?▼
Multiply the panel area by thickness and density. The standard formula: Weight (kg) = Area (m²) × Thickness (mm) × 2.5. The 2.5 is the density coefficient for float glass — meaning every square meter of glass at 1 mm thick weighs 2.5 kg. For imperial: Weight (lbs) = Area (ft²) × Thickness (in) × 12.8. Tempered glass is nearly the same density (2.52), so the difference is under 1% and usually negligible for planning.
How much does glass weigh per square foot?▼
At 1/4 inch (6 mm) thick, a square foot of glass weighs about 3.2 lbs. At 1/2 inch (12 mm), it doubles to about 6.4 lbs. The rule of thumb: every 1/8 inch of thickness adds roughly 1.6 lbs per square foot. In metric, every millimeter of thickness adds exactly 2.5 kg per square meter for standard float glass.
How do I convert glass weight from kg to pounds?▼
Multiply kg by 2.20462 to get lbs. For quick mental math, 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lbs. So a 40 kg panel is about 88 lbs, and a 100 kg order is about 220 lbs. The calculator above handles both units simultaneously — type in one system and see the other live.
Does tempered glass weigh more than regular glass?▼
Barely — tempered glass has a density of about 2.52 g/cm³ vs annealed's 2.50 g/cm³. That is a 0.8% difference. A 50 kg tempered panel would weigh about 0.4 kg more than the same annealed panel. For almost all practical purposes, you can use 2.5 for both and be within the rounding tolerance of supplier sheets.
How much does double glazed glass weigh?▼
Double glazed units (IGUs) are two panes of glass separated by an air or argon gap. The gas gap contributes essentially zero weight, so the unit's total weight is simply twice the single-pane weight. A 4/16/4 IGU (two 4 mm panes, 16 mm gap) weighs 2 × 10 kg/m² = 20 kg/m², plus the aluminum spacer bar which adds about 0.5 kg/m². Triple glazing is three panes, so roughly triple the single-pane weight.
How heavy is a 6mm glass panel per m²?▼
6 mm float glass weighs 15 kg per m² (6 × 2.5 = 15). In imperial, that is about 3.07 lbs per square foot (0.236 in × 12.8 = 3.02 lbs/ft² — the small difference is rounding). This is the most common thickness for interior partitions and shower doors.
Why does laminated glass feel heavier than single pane?▼
Laminated is two panes of glass bonded by a PVB interlayer. The interlayer adds about 0.1 kg per m² — almost nothing. The real difference is that laminated uses two glass panes: a 6+0.38+6 laminated unit has twice the glass mass of a single 6 mm pane. So a 6.38 mm laminated sheet weighs about 15.1 kg/m², while a single 6 mm sheet is 15 kg/m². The 6.38 mm number is nominal — the actual glass weight is from the two 6 mm panes.
What is the weight of glass for an aquarium?▼
Aquarium glass follows the same 2.5 kg/m²/mm rule. A 12 mm thick aquarium pane weighs 30 kg/m². A standard 120 × 50 × 50 cm aquarium with 12 mm glass needs five panels (front, back, two sides, bottom) totaling about 2.4 m² — the glass alone weighs roughly 72 kg. The water inside adds another 300 kg, so the full tank setup is over 370 kg. Always verify the floor load before placing a large aquarium.
