Pond & Pool Glass Thickness Calculator
Water pressure rises with every centimetre of depth — and the glass thickness needed to hold it rises faster still. Enter the depth, panel size and glass type; the calculator converts the hydrostatic head into a bending demand, applies two-way plate factors, and names the smallest stocked thickness that keeps your pond window or swimming pool glass wall safely underwater.

Utilization compares demand to sustained-load capacity — under 80% is a comfortable margin for permanent water, 80–100% is workable but tight, and over 100% means the panel is past its design strength. The model assumes the panel top at the water surface and the bottom edge fully bedded on its bite.
Water Pressure by Depth — and the 3/8 Inch Tempered Ceiling
Any glass thickness pressure calculation starts with the same two numbers: how deep the water is, and what that head does to the face of the panel. Fresh water gains 9.81 kPa per metre of depth — 0.433 psi per foot, the same figure pond builders and divers both quote. The table below is the gauge reading at the bottom of your panel; the pressure at mid-height is half of it, because the load grows in a triangle.
| Water depth (m) | Water depth (ft) | Pressure at bottom (kPa) | Pressure at bottom (psi) | Typical pond / pool use |

Water pressure calculator — 3/8 inch tempered glass
3/8 inch is 9.5 mm, and glass shops stock it as 10 mm — so the question “how deep can 3/8 tempered glass go?” is really about stocked 10 mm panels. The answer bends with width: narrow panels borrow strength from their side edges, wide panels bend as pure vertical strips. These limits assume the panel top at the water surface; keep one stocked size in reserve for permanent installations.
⚠️ Watch the corner case: these ceilings apply to a single clear span. A window with mullions, notches for pipework, or a corner return loses edge help and should be checked at the next-wider row of the table.
| Panel width (3/8 in / 10 mm tempered) | Plate factor k | Max water depth | Max water depth (imperial) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.6 m (24 in) | 0.42 | 1.0 m | 3.3 ft |
| 1.0 m (39 in) | 0.45 | 1.0 m | 3.3 ft |
| 1.5 m (59 in) | 0.60 | 0.9 m | 3.0 ft |
| 2.0 m (79 in) | 0.83 | 0.8 m | 2.6 ft |
| 3.0 m (118 in) | 1.00 | 0.75 m | 2.5 ft |
Derived from the same strip-and-plate model the calculator runs: h_max = (σ·t² / (6000·0.0642·9.81·k))^⅓ for 10 mm tempered at 18 MPa sustained.
Acrylic vs Glass for Pond and Pool Windows
Every water-feature build hits this fork early. Both materials hold water indefinitely; they differ in how they fail, how they age, and where the money goes. The honest comparison depends on depth and panel size — acrylic's weight and flex advantages only dominate once panels get big, while glass wins on cost, clarity and scratch resistance at residential scale.
| Property | Tempered glass | Cell-cast acrylic |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 2.5 kg/m² per mm — a 19 mm panel is 47.5 kg/m² | About half of glass at equal stiffness; panels run much thicker |
| Failure mode | Sudden, into small blunt cubes — drain-down required | Flexes and yields first; rarely catastrophic at moderate head |
| Clarity after 10 years | Unchanged; glass does not yellow or craze | Excellent with UV stabilisers; budget grades can haze |
| Scratch resistance | Hard surface; tolerates algae pads and magnets | Soft — no abrasive pads, no scrubbing, ever |
| Practical depth ceiling | ≈ 2.5–3 m monolithic; beyond that, laminated builds | 50–150 mm panels handle 4 m+ commercial windows |
| Cost at 1.5 m head | Lower — stocked 15–19 mm tempered | Higher — thick cast sheet plus fabrication |
💡 Choose glass when: the head is under about 1.5 m, the panel is a standard stocked thickness, you want minimum cost, and the installation may see cleaning tools more than once a season. Tempered glass also gives pool fencing-style reassurance: if it ever breaks, it breaks blunt.
💡 Choose acrylic when: the window runs deeper than 2 m, spans more than about 4 m, needs curves or a tunnel, or must ship as one piece upstairs and around corners. Its give-before-it-breaks nature is worth real money on deep installations — budget for scratch discipline instead.
Installation: Bite, Silicone and the Frame That Holds It All
A pond window glass thickness calculation only protects the panel itself — installation quality decides whether the system around it lasts. Three concepts govern every water-retaining window: bite (how much glass sits inside its support), the silicone joint that seals and bonds it, and the base detail that carries the whole triangular load down into the structure.
÷60
The bite rule
Workshop rule: bite ≈ water depth ÷ 60, with a floor of 40–50 mm because structural silicone needs real width to bond. A 1.5 m deep window wants at least 40–50 mm of glass engaged in the channel at base and jambs.
100%
Immersion-rated silicone
Only structural silicone rated for permanent submersion belongs under the waterline. Generic glazing sealants hydrolyse and peel within a few seasons — the failure is slow, silent, and discovered by a wet wall.
3 in 1
Base detail jobs
The base channel carries load, sets the panel plumb, and seals the floor joint — three jobs in one detail. A level, padded, fully supported base is the difference between a 25-year window and a stress crack at the first winter.
Info — why the panel never touches steel or concrete: glass under a bending load needs to slide microscopically as it deflects. Every water window sits on a resilient pad or bed of neutral-cure silicone, never hard directly against masonry or channel steel. Point contact on a hard edge multiplies local stress by ten or more and starts the crack that the thickness calculation could never foresee.
Why Depth Punishes Glass Non-Linearly: The h^1.5 Law
Intuition says doubling the water should double the glass. The math says worse. Follow the chain: pressure P grows linearly with depth (P = ρ·g·h). The triangular load's bending moment grows with depth squared (M = 0.0642·P·h² — deeper water is both taller and presses harder at the base). And thickness is the square root of the moment requirement, because a plate's section modulus rises with t². Multiply the exponents: thickness demand grows with h^1.5.

The depth

10×
The depth
needs 31.6×
the thickness capacity
This is why the stocked-thickness table matters more than any single formula: between 1 m and 2 m of head, the required monolithic thickness roughly triples, which on a wide panel can jump you from a 10 mm shelf item to a 19 mm specialist order with crane scheduling. It is also why aquarium and pond glass uses design stresses that already bake in a large margin — glass is strong but brittle, and a permanent water load gives no second chances. When you compare quotes, a fabricator who shows you the utilization percentage is a fabricator who ran the numbers.
❌ Don't scale by eye: “my neighbour's 0.8 m pond uses 8 mm, so my 1.6 m pond needs 16 mm” fails on two counts — the h^1.5 law demands about 22.6 mm of capacity, and a different panel width shifts the plate factor entirely. Run every new depth through the calculator, even when the glass type stays the same.
The “1 mm per 100 mm” Rule — When to Trust It and When It Bites
Pond forums repeat one rule endlessly: 1 mm of glass per 100 mm of water depth. It is a useful first filter and a dangerous design tool, because it silently assumes a narrow panel with strong two-way support. We tested it against the aspect-ratio model this calculator runs, and the pattern is consistent: on panels narrower than about 1.2 m the rule is mildly conservative; on 2–3 m wide panels it under-predicts the required thickness by 20–30%.
| Water depth | Rule says (mm) | Model: 1 m wide panel | Model: 3 m wide panel |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.8 m | 8 mm tempered | 6 mm passes (k = 0.41) | 10 mm needed (k = 1.00) |
| 1.2 m | 12 mm tempered | 10 mm passes (k = 0.45) | 15 mm needed (k = 1.00) |
| 1.5 m | 15 mm tempered | 12 mm passes (k = 0.45) | 19 mm needed (k = 1.00) |
The takeaway is not that the rule is wrong — it is that the rule is width-blind. Use it to sanity-check quotes, then let the calculator adjust for the panel you are actually buying. If the forum number and the modeled number disagree, the width of your panel is almost always why.
💡 Budget rule that actually holds: price glass by weight, not by feel — every millimetre of thickness adds 2.5 kg per square metre, and fabricators price toughening and transport off that mass. Knowing your panel's weight from the homepage glass weight calculator also tells the installer how many people (or which vacuum lifter) the install day needs.
Swimming Pool Glass Walls vs Aquarium Panels: Same Water, Different Math
Search engines send both crowds here, and the first job of a good swimming pool glass thickness tool is routing traffic honestly. A swimming pool glass wall is a vertical retaining panel: water presses on one face, the top edge stands free above the waterline, and the panel leans on its base and two jambs. An aquarium side wall is usually captured on all four edges inside a frame or by adjacent glass, so four-edge plate coefficients apply and every panel gets stronger as its neighbours take share.
This page models
- Pond windows rising out of the water
- Pool viewing walls with a free top edge
- Triangular hydrostatic load on vertical strips
- Frameless, spigot-free installations
The aquarium page models
- Fish tanks supported on all four edges
- Rimless and braced tank builds
- Four-edge plate coefficients and base glass
- Full cut lists for five-panel tanks
If your “pond window” is actually a fully framed panel under the water line — a basement tank wall, a sump window bolted into a steel frame — use the aquarium glass thickness calculator instead; four-edge support is worth real thickness and it will not overstate your build. If the panel stands proud as a viewing wall with a free top edge, the model on this page is the honest one. Pool walls always stay here.
One boundary both tools share
Neither calculator replaces certification. Panels above 1.5–2 m of head, or any installation where failure floods a living space, deserve a stamped check by a glazing engineer against the local glass standard — the models here pre-size the conversation, not the order.
Pond & Pool Glass Thickness — FAQ
The questions pond builders and pool owners ask most, answered with the same model the calculator runs — no forum folklore, just hydrostatics.
Where the Model Stops and Certification Begins
This calculator uses a deterministic strip-plate model with sustained-load design stresses (6/12/18 MPa by glass type), a triangular hydrostatic load, and empirical two-way plate factors. Professional standards — AS 1288, EN 16612, ASTM E1300 — go further with load-duration curves, edge-condition factors, probabilistic strength and interlayer shear models, so a certified answer can differ from this page by a meaningful margin in either direction.
Use the calculator to pre-size, compare quotes, and understand what drives the number. Any panel retaining more than about 1.5 m of water, any installation over a basement or living space, and every commercial pool window deserves a stamped check against the local standard before the glass is ordered — that boundary is a feature of this page, not a gap in it.
