Shower Glass Calculator — Door Weight & Thickness
Enter the panel size and thickness — read the weight in kg and lb, whether the hinge set carries it with margin, the widest door that hardware allows, and the 8 vs 10 vs 12 mm decision laid out with numbers. Built for frameless bathroom glass, honest about what the hardware — not the glass — decides.

Glass Door Thickness Calculator: 8, 10 or 12 mm?
Thickness is a stiffness-and-hardware decision, not a strength one — every shower-grade thickness is strong enough for the loads a shower produces. What changes is flex at the handle, weight on the hinges, and price. The split below is what actually gets installed, and the table prices each step in weight.
How frameless installs split by thickness
10 mm is the frameless default because it is the last thickness most hinge pairs carry with margin — 12 mm is a premium look that pushes doors onto pivots.
| Thickness | 24×72" door weight | Best use | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 mm (5/16") | 49 lb | Sliders, rollers, wide fixed panels | Flexes at the handle on hinged doors |
| 10 mm (3/8") Decision Knot | 62 lb | The frameless standard — hinged doors | Past ~28" wide, hinges need upgrading |
| 12 mm (1/2") | 74 lb | Pivot doors, short premium leaves | Hinge pairs fail fast — pivots required |
| 6 mm (1/4") | 37 lb | Framed enclosures, budget sliders | Never frameless-hinged — no stiffness |
Hinge Capacity: What Each Set Actually Carries
Ratings are printed on the box; the useful number is what the set carries at 80% — the margin that absorbs slams, towel-weight on handles, and years of daily use. The table converts each set into the widest 10 mm door it carries at two common heights.
| Hardware set | Rating | Usable (80%) | Max 10 mm door @ 70" | @ 76" |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wall hinge pair | 60 lb | 48 lb | 19" | 18" |
| Heavy wall hinge pair | 90 lb | 72 lb | 29" | 27" |
| Glass-to-glass pair | 70 lb | 56 lb | 22" | 21" |
| Pivot system | 150 lb | 120 lb | 48" | 44" |
| Top-hung roller set | 100 lb | 80 lb | 32" | 30" |
Wall-mount hinges carry slightly more than glass-to-glass hinges of the same series because the wall plate anchors into structure while the glass clamp spreads load through drilled holes. The 3-hinge question: a third hinge adds ~10–15% real capacity, not 50% — the top hinge already carries most of the moment. When the math is close, step up a rating tier instead of adding a hinge.
Fixed Panels and Returns: Weight the Wall Carries
Fixed panels have no hinge limit — the wall does the work, which moves the check to the fixing. Common return panels and their masses, all 8 mm and 10 mm tempered:
| Panel (W × H) | 8 mm | 10 mm | Two-person set? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 × 1830 mm (20 × 72") | 18.3 kg (40 lb) | 22.9 kg (50 lb) | One person, carefully |
| 610 × 1830 mm (24 × 72") | 22.3 kg (49 lb) | 27.9 kg (62 lb) | Yes — plan the lift |
| 762 × 1830 mm (30 × 72") | 27.9 kg (61 lb) | 34.9 kg (77 lb) | Yes — plan the lift |
| 900 × 1950 mm (35 × 77") | 35.1 kg (77 lb) | 43.9 kg (97 lb) | Yes — plan the lift |
The fixing checklist: U-channels anchor into studs or tile over solid blocking — never drywall alone; anchor rating should exceed panel weight by 3× (a person bumping a panel produces more force than its dead weight); and silicone cure time (24–48 hours) is structural, so the panel must stay braced until it sets. A 77 lb panel in a channel that carries it is safe; the same panel on three drywall anchors is a scheduled failure.
Frameless Door Configuration: The Layout Rules
Frameless means the glass is the structure — every choice downstream sizes off the weight and the hardware. Four rules that prevent the expensive reorders:
📐 Rule 1 — door width first, glass second
Pick hardware before thickness: a 90 lb pair at 72" tall caps a 10 mm door at 28". If the opening needs a 30" door, the honest path is a pivot system — not 12 mm glass on wall hinges (a 30" 12 mm door is 91 lb, triple the budget).
🔲 Rule 2 — header bars carry sway, not weight
A stabilizing header bar across the top adds lateral rigidity for tall doors and walls with no return panel. It does not raise the hinge rating — the vertical load path is unchanged — so weight math stays exactly as computed.
↔️ Rule 3 — returns make doors possible
A glass-to-glass hinge clamps to a fixed return panel, and that panel must out-weigh stability needs: a 10 mm return at least 16" wide gives the hinge something honest to clamp. Narrow 8" returns on tall doors wobble — the door will feel loose even when the math passes.
💧 Rule 4 — gaps set the seals
Frameless doors are not watertight — standard gaps: 1/4" hinge-side, 3/8" to 1/2" strike-side with a jamb seal, 3/4" bottom sweep. Specify these before the glass is cut; a door cut square with no strike gap cannot be sealed after the fact, and tempered glass cannot be re-cut.
Weight numbers on this page are the glass alone — handles, hinges and seals add 3–6 lb to the assembly. The 80% margin already absorbs that; just do not size a hinge set to within 5 lb of the bare-glass weight and call it done.
The Three Calls That Make or Break a Shower Build
💡 Tip: hinge budget before glass beauty
Decide the door width from the hardware table first — 28" on a 90 lb pair, 36" needs a pivot — then choose the thickest glass that fits the weight budget. Reversing the order is how 12 mm doors end up on 60 lb hinges: the look was chosen before the load path was.
⚠️ Warning: 80% is a rule, not a suggestion
Shower doors fail in fatigue, not in a single overload — hinges live with slams, leaning, and towels on handles for years. A door at 95% of rating works on day one and sag-chains by year three. The calculator flags past 80% for exactly this reason; treat the flag as the spec.
❌ Don't: cut, drill or re-size after tempering
Every shower panel is tempered after fabrication — cut a notched panel down afterwards and it detonates in the shop, not in your bathroom. Order the exact size with handle cutouts, hinge holes and notches specified up front, and measure the finished opening twice: tile thickness changes everything.
Shower Glass FAQ
What the Shower Model Assumes — and What to Verify on Site
The weight model is exact for rectangular panels: width × height × thickness × 2500 kg/m³ — hardware cutouts reduce it by grams, polished edges add nothing. The hinge table uses manufacturer-published set ratings with the industry 80% margin; your hinge series may differ, so verify the rating stamped on the box. Max-width figures assume the full height is glass — transom strips and header bars change the load path slightly in your favor.
Out of scope by design: steam enclosures (sealed ceilings change everything), curved glass, and structural wall assessment for channel anchors. Tile-over-blocking fixing checks are a carpenter's job, not a calculator's. When the layout involves tall doors past 80" or glass-to-glass clamps on narrow returns, bring the printout to the glazing contractor and let them verify against the hardware series they stock.

Size the Door Before the Glass Is Ordered
Tempered glass cannot be re-cut — the weight, the hinges and the gaps all get decided before fabrication. Run your panel, check the 80% line, and order with the hardware verdict printed next to the weight.
